The Heart of It 2024: Fellowship Application

The Fellowship program is open to THOI Alumni whom have attended at least one year of The Heart of It, with priority given to those writers that have attended at least two years of The Heart of It. We highly encourage past Residency and Project Portal fellows to apply.

This application should be filled out in conjunction with The Project Portal and/or Duo Residency application. Please be sure to submit all applications by the deadline.

The Fellowship program is an emergent element of 2024, and it is meant to increase community capacity, community and cultural wealth, and increase financial accessibility to writers. This program is applicable to both The Project Portal and The Duo Residency.

Details about the program:

  • The Fellowship program covers all tuition for The Project Portal or The Duo Residency, and comes with a travel and grocery stipend.

  • As part of The Fellowship program, you will have the following responsibilities:

    • Provide light facilitative and logistic support for The Project Portal and Duo Residency writers during The Heart of It and minimally in the weeks leading up (help crafting an agenda, checking in with writers each day, and facilitating a few workshops if you’d like. Helping plan grocery trips and meals, support coordinating arrivals and departures, etc.).

    • Communicate with THOI staff and be on call to attend to alumni needs while on site, as well as general retreat logistics and emergent support needs.

    • Attend a nightly staff meeting after programming has wrapped, as well as morning meetings before programming beings.

    • Facilitate one workshop for the first year or alumni cohort on site, with guidance and support from other THOI staff.

    • Help turn the farm over between cohorts if you are on site for a transition day (cleaning and resetting cabins, welcoming the cohort, helping with dinner on night one, etc)

    • Meet, communicate, and collaborate with other Fellowship writers and full-time THOI staff as well as Oz Farm staff if necessary.

    • Support with transportation around the farm.

    • Be open and available for emergent tasks that may arise during your time on site.

    • Contribute to the community, culture, and ecosystem in the unique and meaningful ways that only you can.

    • Work on your own creative projects and writing, and spend time with other writers doing the same.

Dates: Dates are to be determined based on applicant volume and scheduling among all programs. For the Fellowship program, dates will range between 4-6 days. Dates will be set in collaboration with you and THOI staff upon acceptance. You can also apply for the alumni cohort in addition to The Fellowship, though the alumni cohort is not eligible for a Fellowship position.

Eligibility: Any writer that has attended at least one year of The Heart of It can apply, and priority is given to those that have attended at least two years. The Fellowship program does not apply to the alumni cohort, and is only a funded work-trade position in The Project Portal or The Duo Residency

Tuition: The Fellowship program is a fully funded spot in The Project Portal or Duo Residency program, and The Heart of It will also cover all travel up to $500 as well as a grocery stipend during your cohort.

Location: Oz Farm in Point Arena, California
